What is the temperature like?
In late September, Lake Como carries a soft, lingering warmth from summer, tempered by the first whispers of autumn. The days are often golden and mild, with gentle sunshine illuminating the lake’s surface and casting long, elegant shadows across the mountainsides. Afternoon temperatures usually sit comfortably in the low 70s °F (low 20s °C), ideal for strolling through villas or enjoying an alfresco meal along the water. Evenings, however, begin to cool, dipping into the 50s–60s °F (10–15 °C), calling for a light sweater or jacket.
How do I get around?
Getting around Lake Como is as much about the journey as the destination, every mode of travel reveals a different facet of the lake’s charm.
The most enchanting way is by ferry or private boat, gliding across the water as villas, cypress-dotted hills, and pastel villages unfold before you like a painted panorama. The boats create a sense of timeless elegance, connecting towns such as Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio while offering views you cannot capture by road.
On land, the narrow winding roads hug the lake’s edge, perfect for leisurely drives where each bend opens to breathtaking vistas. Taxis and private drivers provide comfort and ease, especially for those less inclined toward navigating the curving passages.
For a more local rhythm, buses link the towns, winding through hidden hamlets perched above the water.
Walking paths and cobblestone lanes offer the purest way to explore, whether it’s meandering through lakeside promenades or hiking trails that rise into the mountains for sweeping views.
